Web2.0 - Rethinking Our Schools?

My reaction to the videos "Shift Happens" and "Pay Attention" was kind of guttural and terrified. I feel like I am way below the technological level of the image I now have of these kids. Granted, I will be teaching upper Elementary and Middle School age students, so it's not quite as bad as if I were to walk into a high school classroom, but still...

These videos were very dramatic in the way that they made their point. I also feel like there's a lot more to it than just some teacher (me), who is fairly technologically impaired, attempting to throw out assignments just because they incorporate technology... what about the kids without i-pods? What about maintaining a certain level of, forgive me for saying it, control in the classrooms... These are issues that have to be well-thought out and we must weigh the advantages vs. the disadvantages...

I really do like the new Revised Bloom's Taxonomy with the added level of "Create."

  1. Yes --- terrifying certainly can define where this is going. However, with awareness and picking the tools that make most sense to you in your particular situation --- you'll achieve a richness that is not otherwise possible.

  2. Michelle,
Charleston was a long time ago. After my three years there, I taught in just about all the "in-town" schools in the Coos Bay schools. I LOVED TEACHING! Every September I was just amazed to find that I was given the opportunity to teach another year! What a gift! I finally "retired" from public education and taught in a small private school there in Coos Bay for three more years. So different, but I did learn so much from the experience. Then, my husband and I moved to Gold Beach. We lived up Cedar Valley Road (you may have known it as Squaw Valley Road). While there, I taught Special Education in Port Orford. Another great experience. Two years ago we moved to Wyoming. I'm working in the Court system now. Another learning experience for me. You're never too old to learn. :) You can imagine my surprise when I read my name in your blog. Well, actually, a friend of mine found it and passed it along to me. Your writing is wonderful! Thanks for sharing your early experiences. They are a chunk of what made you the way you are. More impressive, though, are your thoughts about teaching. Are you doing this blog as part of a class?
My e-mail is davepolhamus@gmail.com. Please e-mail me your maiden name. I just can't wrap this old brain around it. Thanks! This little adventure of happening upon your blog has been a joy to my soul. Good luck as you work your way to join the greatest profession around.
